Are You Opinionated?

I was browsing YouTube just now and stumbled upon some videos about Rob Bell (here and here) — some people supporting his theology and others labeling him a heretic.

I don’t link to the videos to encourage you to throw your hat in the ring and duke it out with either side, but only to raise the following point. When you hold so strongly to a viewpoint about some topic, even to the point of posting internet material that angrily attacks those disagreeing with you, it’s time to ask the question: what do I have to lose if I’m wrong?

The point being that it seems like we hold on so firmly to our viewpoints, not because we passionately believe, but because we’re so afraid of…something. I’m not exactly sure of what. But it just seems like there’s more than the validity of a viewpoint at stake.

I welcome anyone’s thoughts on the matter.

Obama on the BCS

If the only thing he did during his presidency was to establish a playoff system in college football, he’d be successful president.

A Question

Is it me, or are Christians more evangelical about voting for President than they are for Jesus?

I may not be a college student anymore, but my freezer sure looks like it!

My Freezer

I bought the box of 200 Otter Pops from Sam’s Club about a month and a half ago. As you can see I still have a lot of work to do to finish them off.

The Curse of the Billy Goat

The Dodgers haven’t won a playoff series since they won the World Series in 1988 — but that pales in comparison to the Cubs World Series drought. They have not won since 1908, and for more than 60 years have been under the “Curse of the Billy Goat”.

For those unaware of this curse, here is a summary from the “Ultimate Source of Truth” (a.k.a. Wikipedia):

The Curse of the Billy Goat is a curse on the Chicago Cubs that was started in 1945. As the story goes, Billy Sianis, a Greek immigrant (from Paleopyrgos, Greece[1]), who owned a nearby tavern (the now-famous Billy Goat Tavern), had two $7.20 box seat tickets to Game 4 of the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers, and decided to bring along his pet goat, Murphy (or Sinovia according to some references), which Sianis had restored to health when the goat had fallen off a truck and subsequently limped into his tavern. The goat wore a blanket with a sign pinned to it which read “We got Detroit’s goat”.[2] Sianis and the goat were allowed into Wrigley Field and even paraded about on the playing field before the game before ushers intervened and led them off the field. After a heated argument, both Sianis and the goat were permitted to stay in the stadium occupying the box seat for which he had tickets. At this point, Andy Frain (head of Wrigley Field’s hired security company at the time), waved the goat’s box-seat ticket in the air and proclaimed, “If he eats the ticket that would solve everything.”[2] However, the goat did not. Before the game was over, it started to rain and Sianis and the goat were ejected from the stadium at the command of Cubs owner Philip Knight Wrigley due to the objectionable odor of wet goat. Sianis was outraged at the ejection and allegedly placed a curse upon the Cubs that they would never win another pennant or play in a World Series at Wrigley Field again because the Cubs organization had insulted his goat, and subsequently left the U.S. to vacation in his home in Greece.

The Cubs lost Game 4 and eventually the 1945 World Series, prompting Sianis to write to Wrigley from Greece, saying, “Who stinks now?”

It should be noted that 1945 was the last time the Cubs have actually made it into the World Series.

Weekend Roundup: Protests, Gangsta, Major Ownage, and Prospects

A look back at the weekend I had with Constantin, Evan, and Mike, who flew up and hung out with me to make it a hella fun weekend.

Protests — It was great to have some good friends visit this weekend and we all had fun heckling the Giants at the baseball game Friday night.  From making fun of their poor PA announcer, terrible sound editing, and scary seal mascot to enjoying the demise of Brian Wilson to freezing in a cold San Francisco night, our own protesting was equaled by the Giants manager’s lame protest of the game during a home run instant replay review.  I think Bengie Molina would have needed a pinch runner anyway to round all the bases.

Gangsta — Saw the movie Burn After Reading with Evan and Constantin on Saturday. Being a Coen Brothers movie, you know it was a little bit of a crazy movie, but it was also very funny.  John Malkovich, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt — all hilarioius.  A very good film…Ate at “Back Forty Texas BBQ” on Saturday — not so gangsta food.

Major Ownage — USC was pretty well owned in the first half of their defeat to Oregon St. on Thursday night — especially on the defensive side of the ball.  But I was determined not to let it rain on the Dodgers’ parade as they clinched a playoff spot the same day…Which leads me to the second ownage of the weekend — the Dodgers’ ownage of the NL West.  Not exactly a strong division, but the Dodgers finished the regular season real strong and it should be an exciting series with the Cubs…I also owned in “21″ on the basketball court Saturday — though Constantin did win both games of HORSE.

Prospects — There’s nothing Giants fans seem to enjoy more than the talk of prospects.  I guess that’s what you do when your season has been over for the last 3 months.  But there’s something extra delusional about Giants fans.  Maybe it was the Giants fan on the BART after the game who denounced the need for a power bat and proclaimed that only a little tinkering would produce a Giant’s World Series or maybe it’s the talk radio that is already looking ahead to 2009 (do they honestly think Barry Zito is going to pitch well for an entire year?).  To put it bluntly, 6 years ago a team with Rich Aurilia, Omar Vizquel, Randy Winn and Aaron Rowand wouldn’t have inspired a lot of confidence from the fan base, so why should I expect them to now?  If the prospects I watched on Friday are the saviors of the Giants franchise, Peter McGowan is getting out of town just in time.

Needless to say, it was a fun weekend to see my friends, enjoy a lot of sports (hella lot of sports!), and eat lots of food.

Welcome to the crowded margins of life. It's a place where normal people don't feel normal. Where the daily grind drowns out the soft cry within that says, "I do not have it together." Where just beneath the surface we long for meaning and -- dare we hope -- wholeness.
